I always thought of the Philippines as a sleeping T-rex, time to wake it up from it\'s deep slumber.

The Wealthy, the Poor, and the Filipinos (part 1)

August 17, 2007

“The rich getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.” How many of you have heard of this statement? This is probably the most common statement that I have ever heard between the rich and the poor. (Thanks ADB)

How about this, have your heard of this statement?

“If you ever redistribute the wealth of the world evenly to all the people, within 5 years it will be back to the same people who had it before… the rich people will keep doing what they learned on how to build wealth, and the poor will do whatever they’ve been doing before.” (I’m paraphrasing this)

Even though an average Filipino dreams of becoming rich, does he even deserve to be wealthy? Does he/she have the mindset of becoming rich or does it only exist in his dreams? There have been reports that there were squatters that were relocated and were given land titles but to only to sell the land titles and to squat again. What’s wrong with this picture?

A new species of shrew and a striking orchid variety have been discovered on the western Philippines island of Palawan, scientists said Friday.

The Conservation International expedition to Mount Matalingahan in southern Palawan believes the species had never been recorded before, the group said.

The shrew is slightly larger than a mouse with soft brownish-black fur, a long tail, sharp snout and small eyes.

The apparently new species of plants include an orchid belonging to the genus Coelogyne with "a beautiful set of white flowers with golden lip petals."

The specimens are to be sent to the national museum in Manila and the Chicago Field Museum, said the group's spokeswoman Jaynee Tabangay.

Mount Matalingahan sits in a 120,000-hectare (296,400-acre) forest. Conservationists want the government to declare the site as a protected area for wildlife.

The Eventual Future of Media Entertainment

August 8, 2007

The two futures of mobile media entertainment in the Philippines and the world:

Mobile TV is set to take off in the Philippines in the later part of this year, but the following must be done so it will have a broader reach:

Output to TV/HDTV:
A universal device must be made so any cellphone that has DVB technology in it can be output to TV/HDTV. Some of the middle class Filipinos have bought HDTV, but of course there are no good unless they can watch HDTV broadcast on it, with DVB there’s that possibility.

Cellphone networks to be the new cable companies:
I’m paying a service to watch my TV but in the future, I want whatever I watched on my cellphone to be easily accessible too when I get home. And thus, if ever they get the output to the TV thing working, cellphone companies will become the new cable companies.

P2P Cellphone Router:
Each cellphone will become somewhat like a wireless router. A common wireless network for those who are willing to share their net access. Internet access penetration in the Philippines is not that high. But cellphone is. So being able to share the net access to whoever is willing share will hopefully expand the internet access in the country.

WiFi+3G+Skype
Ever heard of Skype? You can anyone for free in the world as long as they have an account with Skype. The problem right now with Skype is somewhat you’re next to your PC and/or with your WiFi router. Well with access to WiFi spots and 3G this will hopefully change.

Flash Lite
You’ve seen the impact of user generated videos by sites like Youtube, Google Video and Metacafe, etc., demand for such videos will continue. By having Flash Lite technology in the cellphone will you watch such sites. Of course we also want to be able to record directly from our cellphone to upload it to such sites.

Koreans: The Most Misunderstood Visitors in the Philippines

August 3, 2007

Living in the US and getting to know different people from different cultures, this article does indeed point out that most Filipinos do indeed misunderstand the Koreans. Koreans tend to stick together (maybe because of they’re not comfortable with English as much) if they’re going out to eat, mall, etc. and this may have labeled them as the article states.

But I beg to differ, Filipinos in groups are also tend to be noisy too, especially tourists. And for some odd reason, Filipinos somehow learn to somewhat discipline themselves and obey the laws more when they go to other countries.

This seems to be the first time that there’s a lot of tourist in the Philippines and that’s why other people may feel uncomfortable about this, but tourist being “noisy and undisciplined” is quite the norm.

Korean visitors, students and "tourists" in the Philippines have been seen and observed as "too noisy, undisciplined and rowdy."

Because of their behavior many Filipino businessmen do not welcome the presence of Koreans in their establishments.
