I always thought of the Philippines as a sleeping T-rex, time to wake it up from it\'s deep slumber.

Manny Pacquiao: The New Poster Child of Philippine Education?

June 22, 2007

With the rate of Filipinos dropping out of school has been increasing, can Manny Pacquiao save them?

According to recent news, Department of Education has cited the education of the Philippines has been dismal. Everyone knows that education is a vital key to help fight poverty.

Manny Pacquiao has become a internationally known sports figure in boxing and also became Fighter of the Year.

Now here it comes… Manny Pacquiao has gone back to school:

Now what does this two have something in common? If I was part of Department of Education or any some sort PR person. I would have put the two together.

Manny Pacquiao being nationally known in the Philippines as a great fighter and a sports hero to the youth, he has been idolized by many children. Now that he is going back to school, he knows how education is very important. If the media and Department of Educations spins this in the correct way, this may help the youth to keep out of streets, keep them in school and motivate them to be like the Pacman.

What a great hero for the Philippine young people to inspire them to complete there education and to stay fit while they are doing it. Filipinos(as) all over the world will take inspiration from this.
The fiuture of the great Philippines is in their youth. They are just beginning to awake and will rise up as a huge positive force in the world after the horrible things from the 2nd world war and the subsequent Marcos era.
Manny and what he represents is the indomitable spirit that they have been waiting for Manny and his people will accomplish great things.
When one is able to witness the way he fights, and after giving his all in the ring as only Manny can… and screams out the words into the television cameras… “I love you Philippines’….you will not be able to have dry eyes….at that magic moment you see and feel the great pride and passion of the wonderful Philippine people.
By including education into his busy schedule he will show the Philippine people what he considers to be important.
When a Filipino mother or father will be having some challeng with their child with their commitment to their school and their studies….they will be able to say,,,,”look at Manny Pacquiao….he says you must go to school….and you must train hard….to be a proud Filipino….the world is watching and waiting for us ….you are the future of our great nation….our peoples are distributed all over the world….we have an important role to play in the future of our planet….go to school and study the best you can….”

It would work, IF the media is able to spin it in the correct way. Unfortunately, the media’s focus is primarily on politics (though it’s good that manny’s getting his fair share of media attention). However, IF media is able to spin it in the right way, you also have to consider the youth culture’s involved. There’s the emo, the hip hop, and what-have-you. These cultures, and the colonial mentality it inherently brings with it, overrides nationalism and the desire of the youth to pursue education. Not all the youth look up to Pacquiao, they also look up to 50 cent and Yellowcard. Also, not all of the youth want to study, which is saddening. :)
