I always thought of the Philippines as a sleeping T-rex, time to wake it up from it\'s deep slumber.

There’s no Pop Songs in the Philippines

June 2, 2007

Yup that’s right, it seems there’s no such thing as pop songs in the Philippines, if there are, its rare or imported from another country i.e. USA, Japan, Korea.

This is pretty bold statement but I think I can provide some evidence of this.

For some reason “pop” music in the Philippines has been categorized with ballads and/or alternatives. There are great bands over there doing covers of rock ballads or singing their own compositions. But it’s still not “pop” music.

Pop artist/s are “packaged and groomed” as an individual artist and/or as part of a group.

If I may, the categories that are dominant in the Philippines are ballad, alternative, rock, weird ones (otso, otso), dance, rap, R&B, Christian, revivals, and traditional. But no poppish beat.

Now there’s no reason why should anyone wonder that Japanese/Korean/ American pop music are popular in the PI, because there’s no artist/s that has been doing this type of pop songs.

One can argue, pop music is really whatever is popular. But pop has elements of that one can dance too, a repeating beat, and pretty simple melodies with wide range of sound. One is yet to find this in Filipino music, to make it sound "edgy and modern" .

Korean, and Japanese Pop has been popular even in the U.S. because of it’s beats and intersting syncopations.

But where’s Fil-Pop? or maybe Flip-pop?

Thanks to youtube, I can cite some samples:

The only "poppish" thing I can relate to as of now is this music video by Iya Villania's "Good To Be Me"

Now, if the language of the Philippines is Chinese then these would be the current "pop" music in the Philippines

As a comparison this is apparently the pop music in the PI as of now.

Now let's see some samples of what pop is in Japan:

She's half -filipino and very popular in Japan  right now.  Leah Dizon

The first search result on Youtube with a query of Jpop (ok I know BOA is Korean, but she's fluent in Japanese)

And the two most popular female singers in Japan.

Korean Pop Samples:

BOA singing in English

H.O.T. arguably the one of the boybands that lead K-pop

American Sample:

Britney Spears

It's really quite surprising that Flip-pop/filpop has not develop yet even though it's heavily influence by western music. It's an untapped, and very profitable market.

Yes I coined the term:  Flip-pop/filpop

I’m proud we don’t have pop in the Philippines. I’d rather the local music scene do without mass-marketed, market-researched, choreographed, payola-dependent pap.

Sure, but listening to revivals of love songs all the time devours the artist of it’s creativity.

I actually like many bands in the PI, I even remember Side-A, Nexus, Neocolours, Eraserheads, etc.

But I actually think by having pop songs in a country helps the country to be also competitive globally. Because artist are more or less diplomats of the country.

Everything is somehow connected to the economy/culture influence of ones country. US, UK, Japan, Korea, and soon China are examples of this.

And Britney Spears-type pop doesn’t?

Soulless pop is just as bad as love song revivals and more expensive (wasteful) to boot. Right now we have a growing rock / intelligent pop scene with Sandwich, Imago, Itchyworms, etc. Rivermaya has been released regionally. We don’t need another Boa or Rain to compete.

Soul-less pop is bad true, but back in the day, she had a passion for what she was doing but as you see now, she’s pretty much out of the scene.

Actually I believe the other way around, competition is good… most of the time.

Then again like I said they have an influence over the masses. Figuratively speaking they are an of a country.

Even though it’s more rap, Dice&K9 seems to be type that can go global.

actually I find pop music cheap… but then, if it talks about it as Philippines’ future asset, why not give it a try! :D

personally i’m grateful that this kind of pop music does not thrive in the philippines. i’d rather dance to pinikipikan’s or junior kilat’s beat. but we do have some pop similar to the ones you posted , search for april’s stay real and hey boy in you tube and cherry lou’s manila girl and also their other vids.

but if ever an artist of such genre becomes big, i hope they are better than gary v and viktoria or at least as talented. for me gary v is better than most of those justin timberlake clones. check viktoria’s pwede ba vid in youtube in case you’re not familiar with her. it’s an old vid but still kicks ass.
and i think with billy crawford representing pinas more now, you just got your wish. if i have to make a choice, i’d pick him over any j-pop or k-pop artist. they say sarah g. would also be doing danceable pop. they probably read this blog. he he! this is my humble take on pop.

Hey thanks for stopping by Hablon!

I’ll check those singers out. I still remember manila girl actually, wasn’t it by put3ka? I agree with you that gary v is better than justin timberlake too.

Well it’s not that I wish this kind of music to proliferate in the country, but rather it’s a missing market.

Hey who’s sarah g too?

Thanks again.

sarah geronimo. she’s more known for belting out a la celine dion. but her website plays clips from her coming album and they have good beats. they say she’s really learning to dance to also branch out to this dance pop genre. if she does well here, she’ll kick ass, coz in the first place she is a belter and can really sing and still very young.

i agree with a lot of people who posted they would rather not have the typical POP music being celebrated in other countries.. i don’t especially like the pretty boybands/girlbands of korea, japan and china that overwhelm the pop music scene by the sheer force of popularity and not by talent. i also don’t like teens who pretend to be singers when all they do is dance and lipsynch. i just looked at the billboard charts of the US and i’ve realised that the current popular songs in the US doesn’t even have good lyrics anymore. not all, but most.

im proud of being don’t have any pop songs in the philippines but inside of that there are many more beautiful and meaningful songs in the philippines. likes the love songs that philippines have and compost of many artist. i agree with a lot of of people who posted they would rather not have the typical pop music being celebrated in other countries. i know many songs of U.S and few countries but the only songs that pretty for me is the “when you look me in the eyes” of jonas brothers. only that one i like than on others. in philippines sarah geronimo is now the latest pop singer but inside of that sarah being simple and unselfishly. i see the populars songs of US but all of that doesn’t have good and nice lyrics compared like into a rotten fruits.

I very much agree to your article that the Pop Music is an undermarket genre in the country. To be honest, currently I prefer J-Pop and K-Pop over our songs right now. What sidrives me to like them is that their beats are more lively/dynamic than ours. I also admire their songwriters because they freely enjoy using their language in to cool music. Maybe that’s also one reason that Pop songs doesn’t get much affection here since most Filipinos think that using Filipino in dance or pop music will always be categorized as novelty. :(
